SSE was formed in 1998 as a result of the merger between Southern electric and Scottish hydro. Southern electric had previously been supplying energy to England since 1947 while Scottish hydro was supplying energy in Scotland. SSE has since brought to its fold Airtricity of Ireland and the SWALEC (South Wales Electricity) of Wales.
SSE is currently one of the top six energy suppliers in the United Kingdom. Throughout Britain, it supplies energy to over 8 million domestic energy users. SSE also holds the title of being UK’s biggest generator of renewable energy. This energy generation includes hydro power of over 1450MW and 840MW of wind energy. SSE has even more offshore and onshore wind farms under development. This is bound to significantly increase their wind energy production.
